Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?
Three days is a comfortable stay: one for the old city temples, one for elephants and Doi Suthep, and one for a cooking class or a mountain day trip.
Where should I stay in Chiang Mai?
Inside or just outside the old city moat is the most convenient base, close to the temples, markets and cafes. The Nimman area suits those who want trendy coffee and nightlife. See the options below.
Which elephant sanctuary is ethical?
Choose a no-riding sanctuary that lets the animals roam and does not offer shows. Several near Chiang Mai focus on observation and feeding rather than riding, so book one of those.
How do I get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
The overnight sleeper train is the traveler favorite at about 12 to 13 hours, saving a hotel night. Buses are cheapest and flights take about 1 hour 20 minutes.
When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai?
November to February is cool and dry. Avoid the burning season around March and April, when farm smoke can leave the air hazy.
