Eurail Pass Calculator: Pass vs Individual Tickets

The Eurail Global Pass covers trains in 33 European countries, but since the point-to-point ticket market got cheaper and pass prices kept climbing, the honest answer to “is it worth it?” depends entirely on your specific route. This calculator settles it for your trip: enter your cities and dates, and our route optimizer builds the best itinerary twice: once priced with individual tickets, once priced with the pass (seat-reservation fees included), then shows you both, side by side.

How this calculator works

Most pass calculators add up a fixed fare table and call it a day. This one runs our route optimizer (the same linear-programming solver behind routesolver) twice over real scraped fares. The first solve books your trip with individual tickets and is free to pick whichever mode you allow. The second solve assumes you hold the pass, so covered legs cost only their seat-reservation fee, and it naturally gravitates back to rail.

Then comes the part competitors skip: the pass does not have to cover your whole trip. For each Flexi option we pick the exact travel days that save you the most; for each Continuous option we slide the validity window along your itinerary to cover the most expensive stretch, and price whatever falls outside as regular tickets. The verdict compares the best pass setup against the ticket total, and when the numbers land within a few percent we say so instead of pretending precision. Planning Japan instead? The same engine powers our JR Pass calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Eurail Global Pass actually cover?

National railway networks in 33 countries, including high-speed trains (with a paid seat reservation), regional trains, and many night trains. Some private operators and most urban transit are not covered. A handful of international ferries offer free or discounted crossings for passholders; most ferries are discount-only, so this calculator conservatively prices ferries as regular tickets.

Does the Eurail Pass cover local transport like metros, trams, and city buses?

No. Neither the Flexi nor the Continuous pass covers urban transit: metros, U-Bahn, trams, and city buses always need a separate local ticket, whichever pass you hold. The one meaningful exception is commuter rail operated by the national railways, most notably the S-Bahn networks in Germany and parts of Austria and Switzerland: those are regular railway trains, so the pass covers them, though on a Flexi pass riding one requires an active travel day. This is also why our calculator adds no local-transport savings to the Eurail side, while our JR Pass calculator does: the JR Pass genuinely covers big-city JR lines.

Does the Eurail Pass cover the UK?

Yes. Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) joined Eurail Global coverage in 2024, so the pass now rides the British national rail network, and most British trains need no seat reservation. Eurostar between London and Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam takes a passholder fare rather than being free. Note the gap: Northern Ireland isn't on the covered GB network, though the Republic of Ireland is covered separately.

What are seat reservation fees, and why do they matter?

On reservation-mandatory trains (French TGVs, Eurostar, Italian and Spanish high-speed, most night trains) the pass alone isn't enough: you pay a per-seat fee of roughly EUR 10-35 on top. On a France-Italy-Spain trip these fees add up to a real chunk of the pass's supposed savings, which is why this calculator adds an estimated fee per applicable leg instead of pretending the pass side is free.

Continuous vs Flexi: which should I pick?

Continuous covers every day in the window (15/22 days, 1/2/3 months): right for near-daily movers. Flexi gives you a set number of travel days (4/5/7/10/15) inside 1-2 months: right for trips with multi-night city stays. The calculator prices every option and picks the cheapest for your route, including which specific days to burn Flexi travel days on.

Do youth and senior discounts apply?

Yes: Youth (12-27) saves roughly 25% and Senior (60+) roughly 10% off adult prices. Up to two children aged 4-11 travel free with each adult pass (they still need reservations on reservation-mandatory trains). Set your age bracket in the calculator to compare with the right price.

How does buying through 12Go work?

The pass is a mobile pass: after checkout it's delivered digitally, you add it to the Eurail Rail Planner app, and you must activate it within 11 months of purchase. 12Go sells passes at the official Eurail price, no markup; checkout simply shows it converted to your currency.

Is the Eurail Pass worth it in 2026?

For most 2-3 city trips booked a few weeks ahead: usually no. Point-to-point tickets usually win, especially where buses and budget rail are strong. The pass earns its price on fast-paced trips through expensive rail markets (Switzerland, Scandinavia, long high-speed chains) and on last-minute trips, since walk-up ticket prices are exactly what the pass hedges against. That's a generalization: run your actual route above for a real answer.

Can this calculator mix trains with buses, flights, and ferries?

Yes. By default it compares rail-only itineraries (that's the apples-to-apples pass comparison), but you can enable buses, flights, and ferries. The no-pass side is then free to pick a cheap bus or flight, while the pass side keeps non-covered legs priced as regular tickets, so the verdict stays honest in both directions.
