Siem Reap Itinerary: 2 to 3 Days

Siem Reap is the base for Angkor, the vast temple complex that is the reason most people come to Cambodia. Two days covers the small and grand temple circuits; a third adds a farther temple or a floating village. Here is a clean plan plus good places to stay near the old town.

Start before dawn for sunrise at Angkor Wat, then follow the small circuit through Angkor Thom, the Bayon's stone faces and the tree-tangled Ta Prohm.

Day 2: the grand circuit

Take the quieter grand circuit to Preah Khan, Neak Pean and Pre Rup, then rest in town and explore Pub Street and the night market after dark.

Day 3: a farther temple or the lake

Add the pink-sandstone Banteay Srei and the river carvings of Kbal Spean, or visit a floating village on Tonle Sap lake.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Siem Reap?
Two days covers the main Angkor temples on the small and grand circuits. A third day lets you reach farther temples like Banteay Srei or a floating village without rushing.
Where should I stay in Siem Reap?
The old town and riverside near Pub Street are the most convenient, with hotels, restaurants and easy tuk-tuk access to the temples. See the options below.
How much is the Angkor Wat pass?
Angkor tickets come as a 1-day, 3-day or 7-day pass, bought at the official ticket center. A 3-day pass suits most two to three day visits and need not be used on consecutive days.
Is the Angkor Wat sunrise worth it?
For many visitors, yes. Arriving before dawn beats the heat and the crowds and gives the classic reflection of the towers in the pond, so start early on your first temple day.
How do I get from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh?
A direct bus takes about 6 hours on the improved highway, and it is the simple, cheap option. A short flight is faster if your time is tight.
